Being a mom is hard work. It’s not easy to balance your family’s needs with your own wants and desires, so it’s often easier to give up on making your house a home.

Are you tired of trying to balance housework with your busy schedule? Are you struggling with how to make it all work together?

These are common questions for moms or dads who want to care for their families but still have plenty on their plates.

This blog post will offer you 17 tips and tricks on simplifying the process so that you can spend more time taking care of yourself and those who need you most.

Homemaking is a skill that takes practice, patience, and persistence. But, once mastered, it can allow us as parents to spend more quality time with our children while also maintaining an organized household.

Whether we’re cooking dinner for our family, cleaning up after ourselves throughout the day, or just trying to keep things tidy in general – we must find a way to fit it all in.

To simplify this process, we can break up our daily duties into manageable chunks that work together with the rest of our schedule.

Homemaking for busy Moms

Why I love the term Homemaker and not Stay at Home Mom

Homemaking is about more than just staying in the house all day; it’s about managing your home and maintaining order – physically, mentally, and emotionally.

It can be as simple as picking up after yourself or as complicated as teaching your children to do chores without having to remind them constantly.

In my opinion, this title encompasses so many things that are vital to life, including taking care of yourself and your family

What do people think Homemaking is?

People tend to define Homemaking as women who choose to stay at home with their children after marrying or having a baby instead of returning to the workforce. While there’s absolutely nothing wrong with this lifestyle, it can lead to feelings of loneliness, stress, and depression.

Some argue that Homemaking is more of a chore than a job, but again I would have to disagree because taking care of your home can be both.

You can make it what you want it to be.

I, for one, find joy in all of my daily tasks because they keep me busy, help my children learn valuable life lessons, and keep our family healthy.

I also enjoy taking some time each day to sit down and wind down before bed or even take a moment alone if the kids are napping.

What Homemaking is not

Homemaking is not a dirty word. It’s not something that only married women should do, and it does NOT mean you’re a bad parent if you work outside of the household.

Homemaking is not cooking three meals a day for your family (although you can do this as well)

Homemaking is not ironing your husband’s dress shirts every week.

Homemaking is taking care of those who need us most and being an example for those around us.

So, now that we have established what it means to be a homemaker. Let’s take a look at how you can simplify the process of Homemaking for busy moms.

First, you must set yourself up for success; This means making your life easier by setting up systems that enable you to spend less time thinking about things like what you’re going to cook each day or whether the house is clean enough.

Homemaking Together: Restoring the Family Ecosystem

We all want our children to grow up strong and healthy, but it can be difficult for them to develop into well-adjusted adults without some guidance.

Homemaking can help parents raise better children by creating a family ecosystem where everyone contributes according to their abilities and receives what they need from others in return.

Homemakers provide stability and structure that allows children to feel safe while also giving them the room to learn how they best fit into this ecosystem.

It’s not just about cooking three meals a day or cleaning up after yourself; it’s also about caring for those who need us most and being an example for those around us.

Homemaking is like any other skill; you must practice it to be good at it. And while some people find joy in all their tasks, others might feel like they’re stuck with chores that never end.

But if we take the time to understand what Homemaking means, we can make our days easier by setting up systems that enable us to spend less time thinking about things like what we’re going to cook each day or whether the house is clean enough.

It helps me conserve my energy for the tasks that require more focus, like completing paperwork or balancing our checkbook.

My Modern Twist on Homemaking

In my opinion, modern-day homemakers are those who find joy in all of their tasks, and others might feel like they’re stuck with chores that never end.

However, if we take the time to understand what being a homemaker means, we can make our days easier by setting up systems that enable us to spend less time thinking about things like what we’re going to cook each day or whether the house is clean enough.

I find this helps me conserve my energy for the tasks that require more focus, such as completing paperwork or balancing our checkbook.

Make Your House a Home With These 17 Modern Homemaking Ideas

1) Stop Doing it All!

It seems like a lot of moms today are expected to do it all. We often feel like we can’t get help from anyone because everyone has their responsibilities. But the truth is that you don’t have to do everything alone! So

Talk to your parents, friends, sisters, neighbors, etc., and ask for help when you need it.

And don’t be afraid to accept some help when it’s offered. Sometimes, having someone else there while you run into the grocery store or do an errand can decrease your stress level.

2) Clean As You Go

Don’t leave a room empty-handed. If you put something away, clean up after yourself.

For example, if there are dishes in the sink or toys on the floor, don’t walk out of the room without putting them away or cleaning them up.

This saves time because you’re not looking for things while cooking dinner or working around the house.

3) Set up a Cleaning Station

Make it easy to clean as you go by setting up a cleaning station in your laundry room, where you can place all items that you will need.

To not track dirt, I like to put together a basket with some cleaning supplies and some flip-flops.

Once it’s time to clean, all you have to do is grab your basket and get started!

You can even make it more fun by creating a cleaning basket for each child.

4) Have a daily Fast Night Family Cleaning Session

Every night, everyone in my family does a little cleaning. The most important thing is to make it fun so that it becomes a habit.

The 3-minute Cleanup Routine

I have created a system that has worked wonders in our home. Before dinner, we all head to one room, and one person puts on a song, and we set a timer for 3 minutes.

We then all start rushing to finish as much as we can in the 3 minutes because when the timer is up, we have to stop, then another person chooses another song, and we all move to the next room.

We keep on doing this until we are done with all the rooms or 21 minutes pass.

If we finish cleaning a room before the timer goes, we dance together until the timer starts beeping.

Things you can include in the kids cleaning basket:

  • all surface cleaning spray
  • Two rag or cleaning cloths

5) Make “tidying” less tiring

Kids can add to your life for many reasons, but one of them is not, so you can spend more time tidying.

So, wherever possible, I try to find ways to automate some tasks such as wiping the table where they eat or folding their clothes when they come back from school.

6) Make cleaning fun!

One of my favorite ways to make cleaning less tiring is to turn it into a game.

For example, someone chooses a song, and then we all start “shopping.” We pretend that we are going to buy various items that will complete our kitchens.

It’s pretty effective and a lot of fun.

7) Have a Routine

Having a routine will help you keep track of daily tasks, so everything doesn’t pile up at the end of the day.

If dinner is done every day by 7 PM, try to have homework and baths completed before then. This way, you can sit down right after dinner, play with your kids, or relax without worrying about what’s next on your to-do list.

8) Do Laundry Everyday

Wash, dry, and fold one load of laundry a day.

If you have a lot of clothes to wash, try to get your kids involved so that they can learn how to sort clothing colors, etc. I know it may be tough on the weekends when everyone is home from school or on vacation, but you will thank yourself for being so organized when you don’t have to wake up at 6 AM on Monday to get everyone’s clothes ready for school.

9) Streamline Meals

What are we going to have for dinner, is a question that I resent. So that’s why it’s essential to streamline meals.

When you streamline what you are going to eat, have everything you need. It saves you from having to run out and get ingredients every time you want to cook, which inevitably makes you later than expected everywhere!

And it helps with eating healthy as you won’t just end up with something quick and easy that comes out of a box.

10) Aromatherapy at home

I’m a big fan of aromatherapy, and the best place to enjoy it is at home.

Aromatherapy is a great way to make your home feel more welcoming and relaxing.

Aromatherapy has been used for centuries by cultures worldwide.

It was even used in hospitals as far back as 1928 and continues to be today!

The benefits of aromatherapy are numerous:

  • improved mood;
  • reduced stress;
  • enhanced healing;
  • relief from pain, and many more.

And it doesn’t stop at just an individual–those around them benefit too, with increased focus, productivity, creativity, performance in sports or work tasks, etc.

It also improves relationships because when you’re feeling better about yourself, everyone around you does too! There are lots of different ways you can use aromatherapy at home.

11) Live with a Minimalist Mindset

I know this doesn’t sound like something that will help you get your life together, but I promise it will.

My life changed when I started living with a minimalist mindset.

When you live with a minimalist mind, your home looks and feels much more open and inviting.

You will give yourself so much more room for creativity and life which in return makes you happy!

Owning less means cleaning less, organizing less and stressing less, and thus focusing more on what matters most in life.

12) Create Easy Storage for Toys and Family Items

Toy storage can be an effortless way to keep your child’s room looking organized and clean, but it does take some creativity.

Create a place for everyone to put their things away so that there’s no clutter piling up on the kitchen counters or coffee tables.

It doesn’t have to be anything fancy, just something practical and simple that can help keep things organized so you can get your house clean more quickly.

13) Create Zones for Play

I always encourage parents to create those six zones;

  • A Creative Zone: All the kids’ arts and crafts supplies are stored and away from the everyday play zone.
  • An Active play Zone:  It’s a place where kids are encouraged to jump and climb so that they can stay away from your beautiful french sofa.
  • A Reading Nook:  Where they can sit quietly and read or listen to a book. A place for them to listen to their thoughts and enjoy self-talk.
  • A Work Zone: Where they can focus on their homework or any intellectual material
  • An Imagination Zone:  A place where they can create and build their own world.
  • A Kids Cafe Zone:  A place where they can sit together or with you to enjoy snacks or food. Usually, it’s the dining table, but it’s great to set it so that kids can expect where they are allowed to eat so that you don’t find bread crumbs in their beds.

14) Have a Donate Bin

It’s always great to have a donate bin where everyone can drop off their unwanted items.

Whether it’s clothes, shoes, books, toys or any other goods you don’t need anymore, you can just drop them in the bin.

15) Have a Date Night

I swear by this tip; It changed our marriage. We’ve been doing since the COVID lockdown and never looked back.

We set a date for our Date nights, and we block it so that we don’t take any calls or work calls.

We alternate between home Date nights and going out.

It’s so refreshing to sit together and enjoy each other’s company for an hour,

And it makes you realize how much you love your spouse even after so many years of marriage!

16) Get Rest and Have a Quiet Time

It’s essential to get enough rest and have plenty of time to sit and think. Set some time daily to do your self-care.

Please don’t neglect this; it will help you so much with your mental wellbeing.

Make sure that you do something for yourself every day, go out in the sun, or listen to music!

17)Connect with your family every day

Spend a few minutes with your kids and find out what’s going on in their lives.

Help them by listening to them and understanding their troubles.

By having this connection, you can create a better relationship as a parent and as a child!
